Tom's Thoughts

The ramblings of a busy man.

I was reading an article in the August 28, 2014 issue of Rolling Stone Magazine written by Mark Benelli entitled "The GOP's Fake Border War" and couldn't finish it because it assumed a few false premises, the most important being somehow it is our responsibility as a country because a bunch of children and teenagers are showing up at our border unaccompanied by their parents and then these young people are attempting to cross into our country illegally. I refuse to use the term "undocumented immigrant" because it is an intellectually dishonest term and doesn't accurately portray the situation. These people, regardless of their age, ethnicity, or country of origin are breaking our laws by coming here the way they are doing it.

The rule of law is the very thing which makes our country different from everywhere else in the world. When a person stand before the bar the law is the same for everyone, this isn't true everywhere. People in other countries (which cannot get to a country with a contiguous border with the United States) have to follow a strict protocol to receive the chance to obtain an immigration visa or asylum, so should those attempting to enter the country at our contiguous borders. This should be a no brainer.

The laws, all of them, are for everyone to follow; not just those who match our ethnicity, political alignment, country of origin, or ideology.
